A half century ago plus a few days, Professor Jon Mandaville, an Ottomanist who served as the first resident director of AIYS in Ṣan‘ā', wrote a fascinating article in Aramco World about a debate held in 1511 in Mecca about whether of not Muslims should drink the new brew. It is well worth a read.
