South Arabian Languages Today

Al Jazeera has produced a video on the South Arabian language of Shihriyya, spoken in both Oman and Yemen. Check it out here.

The video is journalistic and not academic, but there are interviews with native speakers and the filming is well done. One of the individuals interviewed in Dhofar suggested that the Shihriyya dialect diffused to Colorado, a rather fanciful idea based on the seeming similarity of an image. Apparently this individual was brought by the Mormons to the U.S. due to their belief that ancient Arabs visited the Americas. For the fanciful Mormon view, click here. For a discussion of how ridiculous these claims are, click here.
