Yemen Update Online has just published a lengthy study of Jabal al-Ẓāhir, near al-Maḥwīt in Yemen's central highlands. Dr. al-Kamāl discusses the geography, climate, history, architecture, administrative structure, biographies of important shaykhs, recent development, education system, economic livelihoods (including agriculture, local crafts, livestock management, beekeeping), local shrines, local plant names, tribal customary law, social organization, life cycle customs, religious festivals, and poetry. In addition there are a number of archival documents and photographs. This is an important contribution to an area that has received little attention.
