In 1978 Najwa and I began a year's ethnographic fieldwork in the beautiful highland valley of al-Ahjur, not far from Kawkaban. Al-Ahjur had several musician families, including Bayt Qashtar. This is a recent song about al-Ahjur with scenes of the valley today. What once was a set of terraces dotted with sorghum, maize, wheat, barley and only a few coffee and qat trees has now become an ocean of qat.
