Editorials

March 1999

Ahlan wa sahlan. At last! Yemen Update is finally on-line. Over the past two decades the voice of AIYS has gone from a mimeographed newspaper to a 48-page bulletin to our internet debut as YEMEN WEBDATE.

I will use this column to keep you informed of late-breaking information and a locus to pass along comments and news sent along by members. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to look at our guide to this website.

Yemen Update will still continue in an annual hard copy to be distributed in late summer or early fall, but articles and reviews will be posted on-line as soon as they are available. I am in the process of archiving most of the past articles and reviews in Yemen Update, although this will take some time. [Any one wishing to help out in this very time-consuming task is encouraged to contact me.]

If you are a veteran or just getting started in any aspect of Yemeni Studies, take a look at the site and see how you may be able to help improve and expand it. The success of this site will ultimately depend on you -- the browser.

I encourage Yemeni scholars and friends to contribute as well and provide their suggestions on how we can all promote a better understanding about Yemen's past, present and future. This is, after all, the primary goal for the existence of AIYS (American Institute for Yemeni Studies) as an organization.

Submissions to Yemen Update
WHAT TO SUBMIT:
Yemen Update (YU) seeks contributions as scholarly articles, serious travel accounts, translations, or works of fiction about Yemen. AIYS reserves the right to refuse any submission felt to be unscholarly, unfair, or partisan. The focus is on the scholarly study of Yemen in all aspects. Individuals who want their material copyrighted are encouraged to do so individually. The goal of Yemen Update is to provide accurate and informed information about Yemen to as wide an audience as possible.
Articles may be original or previously published (permission of the copyright owner must be secured by the author.)
Fiction in any form about Yemen will be considered. Sections have been set aside for fiction and poetry.
Reviews of books and films may be submitted for publication, even if a particular book has already been reviewed for YU. Readers are also encouraged to send in comments on published reviews. If you wish to be considered as a reviewer for books on Yemen, please send your resume to the editor.
Travel articles that reflect a serious interest in Yemen will also be considered for publication.
Translations of articles in other languages (especially from Arabic) are encouraged. In cases where the original article/excerpt is copyrighted, permission must be obtained by the translator.

HOW TO SUBMIT:
YU will publish materials in any language, although English is preferred. Efforts are underway to include an Arabic section at the site. Please submit articles either on disk or as an attachment sent through e-mail to the editor. YU and Yemen Webdate are created using MacIntosh programs, although submissions may be in any standard format. For articles that require transliteration, please use the jaghbub transliteration font and follow the transliteration system of the International Journal of Middle East Studies. Submissions may also be sent in hard copy to the editor.

ILLUSTRATIONS AND PHOTOS:
YU encourages the use of original illustrations and photographs. Any submissions must include written permission by the artist or photographer, unless materials are in the public record. The editor prefers electronic submissions in either gif or jpeg format. Illustrations and photographs submitted can be scanned by the editor and will be returned to the owner. Please note that the hard copy of YU can only accomodate black-and-white images, but color images are suitable for web versions of articles.

COPYRIGHT
It is the responsibility of individual contributors to Yemen Update On-Line to obtain permission from the copyright holders to reproduce the textual and visual materials they wish to include in their contributions.

Acknowledgements
This section will include acknowledgements of individuals who contribute to the site, as well as any other help provided. Names of photographers and artists who contribute to the site will also be provided here on an on-going basis.
