AIYS is a not-for-profit consortium of institutions of higher education dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in all aspects of Yemeni Studies. Institutions as well as individuals are encouraged to join the Institute, which maintains an Overseas Research Center (office, hostel, and library) in Sanaa (P.O. This is the main French research center concerned with Yemeni studies. It operates a building, with an excellent library and rooms for guests at Bayt al-Ajami (just off 26 September Street) in Sanaa. The activities of the centre are documented in the annual Chroniques Yéménites.

The fund was established in memory of Leigh Douglas, who was killed in Lebanon in 1986. The fund makes a number of small grants (ca. 300 British Pounds each) each year to scholars of all nationalities working on aspects of the social sciences or humanities relating to Yemen. Originally founded in 1973 by Sir Mortimer Wheeler (who is, unfortunately, no longer still digging) as the Committee for Arabian and Gulf Studies and then expanded to its present name in 1987. The Society organises lectures on Arabian themes, publishes an annual Bulletin and is organising a Study Day and Workshop on the Red Sea ("Red Sea Trade and Travel") at the British Museum in October.
