AIYS Survey
of Research and
Researchers in Yemen

Survey Questionnaire

AIYS' ongoing evaluation and long-term results study was described in Yemen Update 39 (pp. 7-8). The immediate purpose of the survey is to provide information for AIYS' report on the long-term effect of federal support of overseas research and overseas research centers. Since AIYS was founded in 1978, USIA grants have supported both AIYS' overseas programs (the library, hostel, and scholarly support services) and the fellowship and publication programs. Department of Education funds have since 1994 provided infrastructure support under the American Overseas Research Center Program. Both agencies must report on their funding programs under the Government Performance and Results Act. Federal budgets are now linked with results as reported under the Results Act, and the completeness of the data provided may control the flow of federal money to certain program areas. It is therefore vital for AIYS, as a grantee under a number of those federal programs, to have a comprehensive overview to file with its sponsoring agencies.

The immediate thrust of the evaluation study is to gather information from all researchers who are or were at the time of their research based in the U.S., whether they were AIYS-sponsored or held other fellowships such as Fulbright or SSRC. We also need input from others who used AIYS facilities or services. And to set the scene for the 20-year period that forms the focus of the study we seek the participation of researchers who were in Yemen before 1978. In addition we would like to hear from our overseas members and friends about their interests and experiences in Yemen. The questions below indicate the range of information we need. The information gathered by this survey will, as appropriate, be used for reports on the long-term effects of federal funding, for AIYS' 20-year retrospective study (which will be distributed to all paid-up AIYS members), and in materials on the AIYS website. Your help in making this project a successful one, and the time you spend providing the information requested, will be very much appreciated.

Please print out this form and use it to remind yourself to participate in the survey and send us:
