AIYS Resident Director, Sana'a, Yemen
AIYS maintains an office in the U.S. and an overseas research center in Sana'a, Yemen. The
Sana'a center is under the direction of the Resident Director, who is responsible for AIYS activities
and operations in Yemen and reports to the AIYS Executive Director in the U.S.
Dr. Christopher Edens, who has been AIYS Resident Director in Sana'a since
April 2000, has indicated his desire to leave his full-time position and concentrate
on other obligations. AIYS is therefore actively seeking applications for the position of
Resident Director. Applicants should have the Ph.D. or equivalent professional degree. The person
to be appointed will by preference be an American citizen.
Job description:
With the support of AIYS staff, the Resident Director is responsible for supervising the AIYS hostel
and library; facilitating the process of obtaining research permits as well as other permits and
official papers for all AIYS-affiliated scholars; establishing and maintaining contacts with Yemeni
scholarly organizations and individuals; encouraging joint research projects between Yemenis and
Americans and other foreign researchers; coordinating a public program of lectures and events;
and organizing the annual fellowship competition for Yemeni researchers.
The Resident Director works in close coordination with the AIYS Executive Director and submits
regular reports on AIYS programs, operations, and finances. The Resident Director attends the annual
business meeting of the AIYS Board of Directors, held in conjunction with the annual Middle East
Studies Association meeting. It is normal for the Resident Director to carry out personal research
or initiate AIYS research projects, as scheduling and interest permits.
Applicants should have the Ph.D. or professional degree, previous experience in the Middle
East (preferably Yemen), good command of Arabic, and good administrative and computer
skills.
The starting date for the position is negotiable, starting anytime from early 2008 on.
AIYS envisions an initial appointment of two years and considers a longer commitment as desirable.
Salary (not subject to US income tax) is similar to that of comparable American Overseas Research
Centers; fringe benefits include medical insurance, a housing subsidy, use of the institute vehicle,
one trip per year to the U.S., and a travel subvention to one European professional meeting per year
in which the Resident Director is presenting a paper.
