AIYS Resident Director, Sana'a, Yemen

AIYS maintains an office in the U.S. and an overseas research center in Sana'a, Yemen. The Sana'a center is under the direction of the Resident Director, who is responsible for AIYS activities and operations in Yemen and reports to the AIYS Executive Director in the U.S.

Dr. Christopher Edens, who has been AIYS Resident Director in Sana'a since April 2000, has indicated his desire to leave his full-time position and concentrate on other obligations. AIYS is therefore actively seeking applications for the position of Resident Director. Applicants should have the Ph.D. or equivalent professional degree. The person to be appointed will by preference be an American citizen.

Job description:
With the support of AIYS staff, the Resident Director is responsible for supervising the AIYS hostel and library; facilitating the process of obtaining research permits as well as other permits and official papers for all AIYS-affiliated scholars; establishing and maintaining contacts with Yemeni scholarly organizations and individuals; encouraging joint research projects between Yemenis and Americans and other foreign researchers; coordinating a public program of lectures and events; and organizing the annual fellowship competition for Yemeni researchers.

The Resident Director works in close coordination with the AIYS Executive Director and submits regular reports on AIYS programs, operations, and finances. The Resident Director attends the annual business meeting of the AIYS Board of Directors, held in conjunction with the annual Middle East Studies Association meeting. It is normal for the Resident Director to carry out personal research or initiate AIYS research projects, as scheduling and interest permits.

Applicants should have the Ph.D. or professional degree, previous experience in the Middle East (preferably Yemen), good command of Arabic, and good administrative and computer skills.

The starting date for the position is negotiable, starting anytime from early 2008 on. AIYS envisions an initial appointment of two years and considers a longer commitment as desirable. Salary (not subject to US income tax) is similar to that of comparable American Overseas Research Centers; fringe benefits include medical insurance, a housing subsidy, use of the institute vehicle, one trip per year to the U.S., and a travel subvention to one European professional meeting per year in which the Resident Director is presenting a paper.

How to apply:
Please send a letter of interest, a current CV, and the names of at least three references to: Dr. Maria deJ. Ellis; Executive Director, AIYS; P.O. Box 311; Ardmore PA 19003-0311. Screening of applications will continue until an appointment is made.

AIYS is an equal-opportunity employer.
