LALORC: Local Archives and Libraries, A Collaborative Project
of American Overseas Research Centers

In 2005 the American Institute for Yemeni Studies (AIYS), acting on behalf of partner American overseas research centers (AORCs) and their umbrella organization, the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), was awarded a four-year matching grant by the U.S. Department of Education's Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access" (TICFIA) program to identify archival and library collections in the countries where AORCs are established, and to partner with them and with the AORCs existing local institutional and academic connections in order to undertake focused field efforts provide access to this rich vein of previously inaccessible material.

Collaborating overseas centers and their local project partners are located in the Mediterranean basin; West Africa; the Middle East and North Africa; South, Southeast, and Inner Asia; and Latin America.

Digital resources produced by the LALORC project will become part of the Digital Library for International Research (DLIR), a program of the Council of American Overseas Research.
